A guide to the best gas rewards programs in the US

Whether you put a lot of mileage on your car or rarely leave town, it always feels good to save on gas.

You can find the cheapest gas in your area with third-party apps like GasBuddy and use one of the best cards for gas purchases when paying at the pump. You can also use one or more of the best gas rewards programs to save even more on fuel purchases.

Let’s look at some of the most popular fuel rewards programs to determine which ones are best for you.

Albertsons for U

Albertsons Companies has multiple food and drug retailers in the U.S., including Albertsons, Safeway, Randalls and Vons. All these brands have loyalty programs that let you earn rewards at all participating Albertsons Companies store locations, apps and websites. So, although we discuss Albertsons for U in this section, know that Safeway for U, Randalls for U, Vons for U and other Albertsons Companies loyalty programs work similarly.

You’ll get a birthday treat offer worth up to $10 each year and a free item worth up to $10 each month. You won’t earn points on fuel purchases, but Albertsons for U lets you earn points on the following types of purchases at Albertsons and other participating Albertsons Companies stores, apps and websites:

  • 1 point per dollar spent on groceries
  • 2 points per dollar spent on gift cards
  • 1 point per dollar spent on qualifying pharmacy purchases

You can redeem your points for grocery items or tiered basket discounts via the Grocery Rewards Gallery. You can also redeem points for gas at participating fuel stations at a rate of 100 points for 10 cents off per gallon. Or, you can redeem for cash off your next grocery checkout at 100 points per dollar.   Points expire at the end of the month following the month in which you earn them.

Exxon Mobil Rewards+

Exxon Mobil Rewards+ is a points-based rewards program. Every 100 points earned gets you a dollar back at the pump, so redemptions are set to a fixed cent-to-point ratio of 1:1. Points expire at the end of the calendar year after you earn them.

Joining Exxon Mobil Rewards+ is free. Once you join, you’ll earn 3 points per gallon purchased at Exxon and Mobil gas stations and 2 points per dollar spent at convenience stores or on car washes. Plus, you get 100 points when you make a purchase during your birthday month.

EXXONMOBIL

If you fill your car with at least 8 gallons of Synergy Supreme+ premium gas three times per month, you’ll earn 3 bonus points on qualifying purchases of Synergy Supreme+ gas for the next three months. This bonus program offers 1 extra point on Synergy fuel and 2 extra points on eligible convenience store purchases through the end of the next calendar month.

AARP members can link their accounts and earn a 500-point sign-up bonus when joining Exxon Mobil Rewards+. AARP members with linked accounts will earn 1 additional point per gallon of fuel purchased and 1 additional point per dollar spent at the store. AARP members earn double points on a single fuel transaction on designated AARP Member Days.

You can’t stack Exxon Mobil Rewards+ with the Exxon Mobil Smart Card+ credit card, so you’ll need to use another credit card to earn within the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ program. Kroger Fuel Points

Like Exxon, Kroger’s loyalty program uses points at a fixed-rate redemption. But unlike other programs, you won’t earn points when you purchase fuel. Instead, you’ll earn as follows on select purchases from Kroger stores:

  • Groceries: 1 Fuel Point per dollar spent on most groceries
  • Gift cards: 2 Fuel Points per dollar spent on most gift cards
  • Prescriptions: 25 Fuel Points for non-federally funded prescriptions (75 Fuel Points for 90-day prescriptions) and 1 Fuel Point per dollar of out-of-pocket costs for federally funded prescriptions

Fuel Points expire on the last day of the month after they are earned and don’t combine across months. You can redeem Fuel Points in 100-point increments at the Kroger family of stores’ fuel centers (up to 1,000 Fuel Points) for a fill-up of up to 35 gallons of unleaded, mid-grade, premium, diesel or E85 fuel. At participating Shell stations, you can redeem 100 Fuel Points for 10 cents off per gallon.

You’ll get a 3-cent discount when you fuel up at a Kroger-affiliated fuel center but don’t use Fuel Points.
